More than just a Cheap Trick

Cheap Trick sang about it, there’s no real substitute for it, and you’d be hard pressed to get a job without it. So what is it? What could possibly be THAT important? It’s enthusiasm, energy or in the case of Cheap Trick it’s I Want You to Want Me. That’s right; one of the biggest things I discuss with client candidates and client companies alike is to make the other person feel wanted. Not in some cheesy, insincere manner, but in a real, personal, down-to-earth way. So how does one accomplish such a lofty and grandiose feat?

Well, it starts with interest (nobody wants to hire someone who isn’t interested in the job) and that is demonstrated through preparation (do your homework about the company and their business), ask good questions (showcases a desire to learn and your knowledge of the company) and finally provide them with well thought out answers (know the answers for why you’re a fit for the job and why your interested in the company). See, not so hard, is it? So remember while qualifications are important and compensation is critical plain old interest can’t be beat.
