Everybody wants a (rising) star

In this business, we get to see our share of resumes, and with that as my perspective, let me offer some additional advice on crafting your resume.

Keeping in mind that two of the constants in the hiring process are that most companies want stars, and that a large portion of companies are unwilling to pay for them. So what do they end up hiring most of the time? A rising star, or something relatively close! So how do you convey this in a resume?

Two words: Career Progression. Many people (un)intentionally diminish various roles, or even leave them off their resume altogether in a nod toward brevity. Unfortunately we feel this is rarely the right approach for a career professional. Here’s why: A good recruiter will speak to your strengths and value, but a resume focused on your career progress and continued increasing responsibilities (size, scope, and impact) will almost speak for itself. Companies believe that the best indicator of your future success is your past performance. With that in mind, a track record with continued responsibilities and growth is worth its weight in gold.
