I made them laugh

I’m not sure of the actual number of times, but in the recent past (6 months or so) it seems that this (“I made them laugh”) is a typical response from my candidates when I ask them how they think they did on the interview.

Sure this could be a good (but isn’t necessarily) “sign” that things went well. Yes, it can be an indication of the ease of conversation and the enjoyment of both parties in the conversation. However, it doesn’t indicate if you have the skills and if you were able to showcase how well they matched with their needs. So unless we’re looking for a gig on “last comic standing” we want to keep the humor in line with the conversation and try not to play to the audience because I’ve never had a company tell me that they want to bring someone in for an interview (much less hire them) because they were funny.

Be qualified, be personable & get hired.
