Is your career in Neutral?
The New Year is a natural time for each of us to take stock of our career; where we’ve been, where we’re heading, and what might we want to do differently over the coming year(s). For a real annual inventory, answer these questions.
If you’ve only got a minute or two, here’s a quick way to take stock of the past year. Ask yourself the following questions
· How many new things did I learn this year?
· What notable (i.e., career building) tasks did I successfully complete?
· Will the things I learned make me more marketable?
· Will what I learned last year build my credibility and make me more skilled in my technical specialty?
If you can answer the questions above and quantitatively or qualitatively determine how you’ve progressed, then congratulations on a good year. If not, then you need to think about putting your career in drive. As you do so keep in mind that being in demand and marketable (\ˈmär-kə-tə-bəl\ - Definition: wanted by purchasers or employers) at your current company is great, but it’s imperative that you are marketable to more than one company. So do your research and understand the technical directions of other organizations in your chosen marketplace and make sure that should you need/desire to change positions your value is strong from one employer to the next.
